Grandmother in dead infant case takes own life

STEUBENVILLE - The Richmond grandmother who called 911 after her grandson stopped breathing on March 16 has taken her own life, said Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla.

Terri Utzler, 47, was found dead Wednesday by a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy who came to her home to take her to the sheriff's department to prepare for today's preliminary hearing in Wintersville county court.

Joseph K. Moran, 25, has been charged with murder in connection with the March 16 death of the grandson.

The Cuyahoga County coroner's office determined after an autopsy that Christopher Joy Jr. died as a result of multiple blunt impacts to the head resulting in brain injury.

Joy was the son of Mollie Beck, who had been living with Moran since January at a Richmond residence. Utzler, her mother, lived next door.

Abdalla said Utzler had been caring for the baby when Beck would go to work. The sheriff said Beck brought her son to the grandmother's house around 10 p.m. on March 15 when she went to work. Utzler took the child back to her daughter's house around 11 p.m. and put the toddler to bed, Abdalla said.

The county's 911 system received a call more than three hours later that the child wasn't breathing.

Abdalla said Utzler was to be a witness in the preliminary hearing for Moran.

The sheriff said he has talked to family members and friends who said Utzler kept saying she couldn't live without the baby.

How ignorant is the Review's headline? The could be a little more compasionate! This story is sooo sad. I just hope that there is not more to this story than what they are reporting. Seems a little suspicious.
