GAVERS - A Day Road man shot his live-in girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in an apparent murder-suicide that occurred Friday morning in the presence of their three children.
Dead are Richard A. Mitchell, 25, and Dusty D. Bailey, 31.
It is believed Mitchell shot Bailey to death with a shotgun in the bedroom of their house trailer on Day Road and then used the weapon to commit suicide, according to the Columbiana County Sheriff Ray Stone.
Three children present in the bedroom at the time of the shooting were unharmed: Bailey's 9-year-old son to another man and the couple's two boys, ages 1 and 2. Stone said the children shared the same bedroom as the couple.
The sheriff's office received a 911 call from the 9-year-old boy at 7:33 a.m., and the first deputies on the scene were met by Bailey's uncle, David Adkins, who was asleep on a couch at the time. Stone said it was the oldest boy who alerted Adkins to what had occurred. Adkins said he heard a noise but thought it was the children causing a commotion.
The couple had recently moved in together again because the sheriff's office received a call on April 25 from Bailey indicating they had separated. Bailey contacted the sheriff's office because while they were talking on the phone she heard a gunshot and then the phone went dead, leading her to believe Mitchell had killed himself. Deputies went to the residence and found Mitchell alive, and he told them he was only joking with Bailey.
