BODY FOUND IN OHIO RIVER

February 24, 2011
New Cumberland and Newell firefighters put boats in the water behind the New Cumberland fire station Wednesday afternoon after the crew of a passing barge reported a body in the river around 5:30 p.m. below the New Cumberland Locks. New Cumberland police and Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies and K-9 units from both departments also responded along with New Cumberland ambulance crews. Lester Skinner, New Cumberland police chief, said the body of a man was about 20 yards off shore of the Ohio side of the river. He said there was no evidence of foul play, and no local residents have been reported missing. Skinner said there was no way to tell the man’s age or how long the body had been in the river. Medical examiners in Charleston will work to identify the man, he said. (Photo by Nancy Tullis)
