EAST LIVERPOOL The East Liverpool Police Department is investigating what appears to be a Monday afternoon home invasion, assault and burglary.
Officers went to 689 Green Lane at 1:01 p.m. Monday after the caretaker of the apartment complex discovered John G. Cook, 61, inside his apartment, on the floor and covered with blood.
The caretaker, Charles Andric, told officers he got a report of a broken window, and when he looked in the window, he discovered Cook who appeared unresponsive.
Andric said he entered the apartment to investigate and then called for officers.
"We believe someone entered the home and removed about $300 in cash," police Capt. Norm Curtis said later Monday. "It appears the victim was struck in the face with a hammer."
The blow to the head landed on the forehead just above the nose, Curtis indicated. Blood was flowing heavily.
"He was unable to tell us anything," Curtis said.
Officers on the scene noted Cook could not say or could not remember exactly what happened and was only able to say he had been assaulted.
Curtis said Cook was transported to East Liverpool City Hospital for treatment.
The matter is still under active investigation.
